Antarctica • Islands
The Far South
24 places, seen from above the South Pole with the Atlantic at the top: Antarctica itself, the islands on its edge, and island groups across the Southern Ocean.
The Continent
Antarctica is one place, and six big islands sit on its edge. The map draws the ice shelves as sea, so Berkner and Roosevelt seem to float.
The Atlantic
The Falkland Islands (Malvinas) and South Georgia, then the South Sandwich, South Orkney, and South Shetland Islands, curving round toward the Antarctic Peninsula. Bouvetøya (Bouvet Island) is alone, far to the east.
The Indian Ocean
Four groups, west to east: the Prince Edward Islands, Îles Crozet (Crozet Islands), Îles Kerguelen (Kerguelen Islands), and Heard Island.
The Pacific
South of New Zealand: the Snares, Auckland, Campbell, and Antipodes Islands, with Macquarie Island farther west, then two lonely groups near the ice: the Balleny Islands and Peter I Island.
Where You'll Start
You'll start with the anchors, a few places to hang the rest on: Antarctica, the Falkland Islands (Malvinas), South Georgia, Îles Kerguelen (Kerguelen Islands), and the South Shetland Islands. Then chapter by chapter, or the whole deck at random.
