World • Major Lakes
Major Lakes
63 lakes: the biggest in the world and the best known of the rest. Reservoirs count, and so do salt lakes that are mostly dry.
The Americas
The five Great Lakes, Canada's big northern lakes, and a few famous smaller ones, down to Lake Titicaca, high in the Andes.
Africa
East Africa's great lakes, Victoria, Tanganyika, and Malawi among them, plus big reservoirs like Volta, Kariba, and Nasser, and Lake Chad, at the edge of the Sahara.
Europe
Ladoga and Onega in northwest Russia, the big lakes of Finland and Sweden, and the Alpine lakes, Geneva, Constance, and Garda among them.
The Inland Seas
The Caspian Sea, the largest lake on Earth, with the Aral Sea and Lake Balkhash to its east, then west to Van Gölü (Lake Van), Lake Urmia, and the Dead Sea.
Asia and Oceania
Lake Baikal, the deepest lake on Earth, and lakes from Mongolia and China to Cambodia, Indonesia, and Japan. Then south to Australia's salt lakes and two in New Zealand.
Where You'll Start
You'll start with the anchors, a few places to hang the rest on: the Caspian Sea, Lake Superior, Lake Victoria, Lake Baikal, and Lake Titicaca. Then chapter by chapter, or the whole deck at random.
