World • Non-UN Countries & Territories

Beyond the UN

16 places that stand like countries without a seat at the UN. They're spread round the world, so here they are region by region.

Europe

Vatican City, the smallest of all, inside Rome, then Kosovo, Northern Cyprus, and the Faroe Islands, between Scotland and Iceland.

Africa and the Middle East

Western Sahara on the Atlantic coast, Somaliland on the Gulf of Aden, and Palestine, in two parts by the eastern Mediterranean.

The Americas

Greenland, the biggest island on Earth, and three small islands in the Caribbean: Aruba and Curaçao off Venezuela, and Sint Maarten, the southern half of its island, farther northeast.

Asia and the Pacific

Taiwan, off China's coast, Hong Kong and Macao on it, and the Cook Islands and Niue, out in the South Pacific.

Where You'll Start

You'll start with the anchors, a few places to hang the rest on: Greenland, Taiwan, and Western Sahara. Then chapter by chapter, or the whole deck at random.
