Privacy Policy
Effective October 21, 2026
This Privacy Policy explains what information Whole Wide World, at wholewideworld.app (the "Service"), handles and how. The Service is operated by the operator of Whole Wide World ("we," "us," or "our").
The short version: what you study stays on your device. We don't collect it, and we never see it.
1. Summary of our current practices
- No accounts, no sign-in, and no payments.
- No ads, and no tracking across other websites or apps.
- No analytics.
- No cookies set by the Service.
- Your progress, settings, and field notes are stored only on your device.
- Nothing you study is sent to us or to anyone else.
2. Information stored on your device
To work, the Service stores these on your device, in your browser's storage: your progress, meaning the places you have studied and a record of each answer (when you gave it, where you tapped and how close it was, how long it took, and how far in you were zoomed); your settings; and your field notes.
It also keeps a copy of its own files, its maps included, so that it opens and works offline. Once you have some progress, it may ask your browser to keep that storage rather than clear it when space runs low.
None of this is sent to us. We can't see it, and we can't recover it for you.
3. Progress files
Export Progress & Data, in Settings, saves everything above to a file. The file goes only where you send it, by your device's share sheet or a download; the Service never sends it anywhere. Import Progress & Data replaces what is on your device with what a file holds, after showing you what it will change.
4. Information our hosting provider receives
As with any website, when your device loads the Service, our hosting and network provider receives the technical information that comes with every request: your IP address, your browser and device type, the address requested, and the time. It uses this to deliver the Service and protect it from abuse, and may keep it in logs for a limited time under its own practices. We may see totals from it, such as the number of requests, but we don't use it to identify you.
Apart from that, the Service makes no requests to other companies. Its fonts and maps are served from its own domain, and every page carries a security policy that stops it from contacting any other site.
5. Cookies and similar technologies
The Service sets no cookies. The storage described above, your browser's database and its offline copy of the Service, is what lets it keep your progress and work offline. You can clear it in your browser's settings for this site, which deletes your progress too.
6. Analytics
The Service doesn't use analytics. If that changes, we'll update this policy first.
7. How we use information
We use the information described here only to run the Service, keep it working, and protect it.
8. How information may be disclosed
We don't sell or share your information. What our hosting provider receives is handled by that provider to run the Service, and may be disclosed if the law requires it.
9. Data retention
What is on your device stays there until you delete it or your browser clears it. We keep none of it.
10. Data security
The Service is served only over HTTPS. Your data on your device is as safe as your device and your browser keep it. No way of storing or sending information is perfectly secure, so we can't guarantee absolute security.
11. Your choices
- Delete All My Data, at the foot of Settings, erases your progress, settings, and field notes from this device.
- Clearing this site's data in your browser does the same, and removes the offline copy.
- Removing the app from your home screen removes its copy and the progress it kept, which is separate from your browser's.
- Export Progress & Data first if you want to keep a copy.
12. Children's privacy
The Service is not directed to children under 13. We don't knowingly collect personal information from children, and the Service doesn't ask anyone for it. If you think a child has given us any, write to us at [email protected].
13. International users
The Service is operated from the United States. Our hosting provider may handle requests in other countries, wherever is nearest to you.
14. Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. The updated policy will be posted in the Service with a new effective date.
